The term goes more back to the Civil War Era. Yanks and Rebels, Blues and Reds, etc. Redneck, the term itself comes from someone who worked and received sunburn on their neck, some say it was a "gang" as well that wore bandanas (sp) around their neck to signify difference. Just like all slang terms, its what you hang on it.

There are many stories you can research on all of the terms to be honest. Here in the South, we say Yankee just because of location, nothing really to do with anyones sterotype.

the problem i have is when people form anywhere in the south get upset at being called things like hicks or rednecks and want to be called "southerners" yet have no problem referring to people from the north as "yankees" instead of something like "northerners"

because by that logic.......and these definitions.......these shouldnt be a problem for anybody living in the south......yet they seem to be

the actual first useage of the term "yankee" was by the brits to describe those who had come to america........long before the whole north/south thing

Va was actually the first of the 13 colonies and originally settlers in Va were known as "yankees" also

then it was used to describe those living in "new england" not the "north"

Yankee is based on a location, I understand you think redneck is the same. Its a derogatory term, honestly not having anything to do with where one lives. It is more on action, but this isnt gonna end any way but the way you want it to.

You could say no term for anyone is offensive unless that person thinks it, I do not even really feel that Virginia is that "southern" of a state. Go to Miss or Alabama or Georgia, that is the south to me.

Hick or Redneck is not really describing where you are from, it's more on a sterotype, a false idea on how you live or act.

You say Northern or Southern, it describes a location. Yankee and Rebel, again to the Civil War. Yankees and Rebels.

Im well aware of when it was first used and it is still used to this day. At one point in my life, this stuff was sorta "my thing".

last time i checked not all of the "north" is new england

secondly as i showed you above........."hick" and "redneck" can also be used to describe where you are from
